Statement from Governor Andrew M. Cuomo Honoring the Life and Legacy of Carey Gabay, 10 Years Later

“This weekend marks 10 years since Carey Gabay, a dedicated public servant and cherished member of our extended family, was tragically killed just ahead of the annual West Indian Day Parade in Crown Heights. Carey was caught in the crossfire of a gang shootout, a senseless act of violence while he was simply walking home. His life was taken at a time when he was doing everything right: Giving back to his community, serving his state, and working toward a more just New York.

“A son of Jamaican immigrants, Carey’s story was one of determination, resilience, and deep-rooted belief in public service. A proud graduate of Harvard University and Harvard Law School, he began his career in private practice before choosing a path of public service. As a senior member of my administration, Carey worked on economic development, education, and social equity with intellect, warmth, and tireless dedication. He was admired above all for his kindness, humility, and devotion to making New York better for all.

“As we honor his life, we must also confront the epidemic of gun violence that continues to claim innocent lives in our communities. Carey’s legacy endures through his son Wyatt and a scholarship created in his name to support the next generation of leaders like Carey, a mission as vital as it is noble.

“Today, our thoughts are with his wife, Trenelle, and their entire family. We remember Carey’s extraordinary legacy and recommit ourselves to building a safer, stronger, and fairer New York.”
