PLACE NYC Endorses Andrew Cuomo for Mayor in the General Election
New York, NY – Parent Leaders for Accelerated Curriculum and Education (PLACE NYC), a citywide education advocacy group of parent volunteers dedicated to advancing academic rigor in NYC public education, today announced its endorsement of Andrew Cuomo for Mayor of New York City. Cuomo is the only mayoral candidate with a comprehensive plan for K-12 education.
At PLACE NYC’s Town Hall last month, Cuomo recognized the benefits of a quality standardized curriculum to address unacceptable low reading and math proficiency but expressed openness in “looking at the data.” He also emphasized that the school system must create more opportunities for acceleration.
Cuomo has pledged to expand Gifted and Talented programs in every borough so that children who are ready for acceleration have access closer to their homes. As parent advocates for keeping the Specialized High School Admissions Test (SHSAT), PLACE NYC was impressed to hear that he will protect the admissions process and provide more test preparation support. Additionally, Cuomo committed to doubling the number of Specialized High Schools in NYC from 9 to 18.
"Without a doubt, Andrew Cuomo’s education plan aligns best with our advocacy. He understands that families who rely on public schools want more academic rigor and more opportunities for accelerated learning,” said Lisa Marks, co-president of PLACE NYC.
"As a parent leader with three students educated in NYC schools, I appreciate Cuomo’s breadth and depth of knowledge in education policy and desire to be held accountable for his education agenda. Running the largest school system in the country is complicated and Andrew Cuomo is the most qualified for the job,” added Deborah Kross, co-secretary of PLACE NYC.
In response to PLACE NYC’s endorsement, Andrew Cuomo said: “New Yorkers need results, not de Blasio 2.0. Every parent knows education is the great equalizer. It’s how we give our children the chance to get ahead and live better lives than the generation before them. That’s why I put forward the most ambitious education plan in this race—to implement universal 3K, replace failing schools with a proven, high-performing model tailored to its community, expand Gifted and Talented programs across the city, double the number of Specialized High Schools, and protect the SHSAT while expanding prep programs into underserved neighborhoods. Families deserve real opportunity, not empty rhetoric, and as mayor, I will make sure New York City schools once again become the ladder of opportunity for every child, in every borough.”
Under mayoral control, the next mayor of New York City will have an enormous impact on the lives of millions of students over the next four years. As every parent knows, their children have one educational life and should not be party to the whims of novel social experiments in the hands of a disinterested and inexperienced leader.
Cuomo’s proven leadership, commitment to effective governance, and focus on addressing chronic challenges in the public school system make him the right choice to champion NYC schools and ensure every child has access to a world-class education by expanding opportunities.
PLACE NYC enthusiastically endorses Andrew Cuomo for mayor and urges all parents who are eligible to vote in this consequential election. Voters have until October 25, 2025 to register to vote at e-register.vote.nyc. Voting can be done with a mail-in ballot, requested at requestballot.vote.nyc/earlymail today, or by voting early from October 25 through November 2, or voting on Election Day, November 4.
