New York City Coalition of the International Union of Operating Engineers Endorses Andrew Cuomo for Mayor in the General Election

Andrew M. Cuomo, candidate for Mayor of New York City, today proudly received the key endorsement of the New York City Coalition of the International Union of Operating Engineers in the general election.

This is a significant endorsement by the Operating Engineers, which represents 21,000 hard-working men and women. In supporting Cuomo as their preferred candidate, the Operating Engineers touted his record of building major infrastructure projects across the city and his ironclad commitment to use organized labor to help rebuild a stronger New York for working families.

The Business Managers of all six New York City IUOE local unions joined with Ed Christian, who include Thomas Callahan of Local 15; William Lynn of Local 30; Kuba Brown of Local 94; Matthew Gugliotta of Local 211; and Robert Troeller of Local 891.

“Andrew Cuomo is the only person in this race with the proven managerial chops to actually deliver for New Yorkers,” said Ed Christian, President of the NYC Coalition of the International Union of Operating Engineers and Business Manager of Local 14. “At a time when our city needs to launch the most ambitious building program in its history, we can’t afford cheap talk without experience. Governor Cuomo has already shown he knows how to get big projects done — from airports to subways to affordable housing — and he’s the one leader as Mayor who can make New York work for working people again.”

“A construction crew wouldn’t hire someone who’s never built before, and this city can’t afford on-the-job training to lead the greatest city in the world,” said Cuomo. “I’ve spent my career building affordable housing, creating jobs, and driving major infrastructure projects that lifted working families — and I’m ready to do it again as mayor. I’m proud to receive the endorsement of the Operating Engineers and I’m looking forward to partnering with them on Day One.”

The Operating Engineers join IBEW Local 3, Teamsters Local 237, IBT Joint Council 16, ATU Local 726, and the Deputy Sheriffs Association.

Throughout his career in public service, Governor Cuomo has been a champion for working New Yorkers. He raised wages for millions, protected the right to organize when the Supreme Court tried to break the back of the labor movement, increased access to healthcare, enacted the nation's strongest paid family leave program and expanded apprenticeships, vocational training, and workforce development programs. He also advanced the most substantial infrastructure program in a generation, including the Second Avenue Subway, the Moynihan Train Hall and the new Kosciuszko Bridge and the new JFK and LaGuardia Airports – all major projects built with union labor.

The endorsement adds to a growing coalition of community leaders and organizations supporting Andrew Cuomo as the candidate best prepared to lead New York City forward.
