Queens, N.Y. – Andrew M. Cuomo, candidate for Mayor of New York City, today announced the formal launch of South Asians for Cuomo – a powerful and diverse mutli-denominaitonal grassroots coalition of Hindus, Muslims and Sikhs – during a packed rally attended by hundreds of New Yorkers in the former governor’s home borough of Queens.
The new grassroots coalition will mobilize voters in their communities across New York in the final weeks of the campaign, working to engage and turn out South Asian New Yorkers who share Cuomo’s vision for a safer, fairer, and more affordable city.
Community leaders cited Cuomo’s record of results, his steady leadership, and his proven ability to deliver for diverse communities across the five boroughs as key reasons for their support. They also pointed to his history of fighting hate crimes, expanding small business opportunities, and investing in immigrant communities as evidence that he understands the needs and challenges facing South Asian New Yorkers. They contrast that with Zohran Mamdani’s record of calling for defunding and villainizing the NYPD, decriminalizing prostitution, and closing Rikers with no viable plan for the 7,000 people it houses.
“New York’s greatest strength is its diversity, and the South Asian community is an essential part of that fabric,” Cuomo said. “We all want the same things — a city that working people can afford, good schools for our kids, safe streets, and the ability to live with dignity and respect. I know how to make government work to achieve those goals, and I’m deeply grateful for the support and trust of this community. Together, we’ll make sure New York City’s best days are still ahead.”
Over the course of the campaign, Cuomo has visited dozens of South Asian temples, mosques, and community organizations, discussing his plans to make New York City safer, more livable, and inclusive for all.
“Governor Cuomo has always stood up for all New Yorkers — especially immigrant and working-class communities like ours,” said Hershad Patel, President of Gujarati Samaj of New York. “At a time when hate crimes and economic hardship are on the rise, we need a mayor who will protect our families, fight discrimination in every form, and make sure our neighborhoods have the safety and quality of life we deserve. Andrew Cuomo has the experience, the compassion, and the courage to deliver that for the Southeast Asian community, small business owners, and for all New York City.”
“Small business owners like me know that safety and stability are the backbone of a strong economy,” said Fahad Solaiman, Member of the Jackson Heights Bangladeshi Business Development Association and Community Board 3. “Governor Cuomo understands that when our streets are safe, our businesses thrive and our families feel secure. He’s shown he’s willing to stand up against hate and fight for the hardworking New Yorkers who keep this city running. Andrew Cuomo has the experience and determination to make New York a safer, more prosperous place for everyone.”
Public safety is the foundation of every thriving community, and Governor Cuomo understands that,” Femd Rocky, President of Humanity Empowerment Rights Foundation Inc., said. “He has always stood up against hate and violence, and he’s committed to ensuring that every New Yorker — no matter their background or faith — can walk our streets, worship in our mosques, and raise their children without fear. Andrew Cuomo has proven he can deliver real results, and he’s the leader our community can trust to keep New York safe.”
“Governor Cuomo’s values reflect the core teachings of our faith — compassion, justice, and service to others” said Imam Qazi Qayyoom of Mohammadia Center. “He has always stood up for people of all backgrounds and faiths, and he understands that keeping our city safe means protecting every community from hate and division. Andrew Cuomo has shown through his leadership that he believes in unity, dignity, and opportunity for all New Yorkers, and that is why I’m proud to support him for Mayor.”
