Cuomo Condemns Yom Kippur Attack Outside Manchester Synagogue Attack

Urges NYPD to Step Up Security at Houses of Worship Across New York City to Ensure Jewish New Yorkers Feel the Safety They Deserve

New York, NY –  Andrew M. Cuomo, candidate for Mayor of New York City, today issued the following statement in response to the horrific attack outside a synagogue in Manchester, England, on Yom Kippur:

“The horrific attack outside a synagogue in Manchester on Yom Kippur -- the holiest day of the Jewish calendar -- is a vile act of hate that shakes us all to our core. On a day of atonement, prayer, and reflection, Jewish families should have been safe in their house of worship. Instead, they were met with terror.

My heart breaks for the victims, their families, and the entire Jewish community in Manchester, London, and around the world. We know that when antisemitism strikes anywhere, it is felt everywhere -- including right here in New York City, home to the largest Jewish community outside of Israel.

This attack is yet another reminder of the growing scourge of antisemitism -- and why we must have absolute moral clarity. Those who attack Jews, those who harass or intimidate Jews, those who stand alongside the hate mongers who shout ‘globalize the intifada’ -- they must all be condemned. Not in New York City, not now, not ever.

In light of this horrific attack, I urge the NYPD to take additional precautions outside of houses of worship to ensure those participating in services are safe and can worship in peace.

To my brothers and sisters in the Jewish community: you are not alone. We stand with you in grief, in outrage, and in resolve. We will never allow hate to take root here. We will meet this poison with solidarity, strength, and action -- because an attack on one faith is an attack on us all.”
