Governor Andrew M. Cuomo, candidate for mayor of New York City, today proudly released a video of support from world-famous actor and singer and native New Yorker, Marc Anthony.
In a video created in celebration of the National Puerto Rican Day Parade, Anthony thanked Governor Cuomo for his unwavering support for Puerto Rico. Anthony was born and raised in New York City by proud Puerto Rican parents and he maintains a close connection to the island.
Anthony cited Cuomo’s coordination of “real relief efforts” after Hurricane Maria in 2017, and recalled the devastating earthquakes that hit Puerto Rico in 2019 and 2020, reminding viewers that it was Cuomo who mobilized the New York National Guard to assist in response, and who visited the island to show solidarity.
Andrew Cuomo is “a proud New Yorker who has been in the forefront every single time that Puerto Rico needs help,” said Anthony. “I know for a fact that he stood by Puerto Rico not just in words, but in action, when he established the New York State Office for Trade and Tourism on the Island, deepening the relationship between New York and Puerto Rico. You know what that means to me.”
“These are not empty gestures,” Anthony continued. “They are proof of leadership, compassion, and commitment. Thank you, Andrew Cuomo. Thank you, my brother. Because when Puerto Rico needed you, Andrew Cuomo was there. Period.”
The video will be featured in the Puerto Rican Day Parade in New York on Sunday June 8, playing on a screen that will accompany Cuomo and more than 150 supporters and elected officials as they march.
“I am honored to have my talented friend Marc Anthony’s support, and have been so grateful for his partnership in the past as we’ve worked together to support Puerto Rico,” Governor Cuomo said. “Here in New York City, we value our Puerto Rican community deeply. And we value our close connection to the island that was the birthplace and home to so many New Yorkers.
When the federal government treated our fellow Americans in Puerto Rico as second class citizens,” Cuomo continued, “we in New York acted in their time of need to bring aid and economic development. I thank Marc for his commitment to New York City and to Puerto Rico, and I look forward to working alongside him to support La Isla Del Encanto when I am mayor.”
