New Yorkers Against Gun Violence Cites Governor’s National Leadership on Gun Safety Passing the SAFE Act, Removing Firearms from Domestic Abusers, Launching States for Gun Safety Coalition & Securing Critical Funding to End the Gun Violence Epidemic

New Yorkers Against Gun Violence Joins Everytown for Gun Safety, Giffords, and the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence in Backing Governor Cuomo for Re-Election

New York, NY – New Yorkers Against Gun Violence today endorsed Governor Cuomo for re-election. The group praised Governor Cuomo’s proven progressive leadership making New York stronger and safer in the face of Washington’s inaction. New Yorkers Against Gun Violence cited the Governor’s leadership passing the SAFE Act – comprehensive legislation that strengthened New York's background check system, banned assault weapons, and implemented other common-sense reforms in the wake of Sandy Hook.

This year, under the Governor’s leadership, New York passed a new law removing firearms from domestic abusers.  He also launched a multi-state coalition to combat gun violence, and advanced funding for the SNUG and Gun Violence Elimination Programs to support New York’s disproportionately impacted communities. Everytown for Gun Safety, Giffords, and the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence have also endorsed Governor Cuomo for re-election.

Governor Cuomo said, “While Trump and the federal government work to roll back protections that keep children and families safe, New York has led the nation in strengthening our gun safety laws. Extreme conservatives’ allegiance is to the NRA, and it will never be to the people of New York and this country. The Empire State will lead the way forward by passing the Red Flag Gun Protection bill, extending the background check waiting period and increasing the age to buy a gun to 21. I am honored to have New Yorkers Against Gun Violence’s endorsement and look forward to working together to make this state safer and stronger.”
