Mom of slain Florida high school teacher cites gun control measures in endorsing Gov. Cuomo

The mother of a slain Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School teacher endorsed Gov. Cuomo’s reelection effort in a digital campaign ad unveiled Saturday.

Linda Beigel Schulman, the Dix Hills, L.I., parent of heroic school shooting victim Scott Beigel, hails the governor for enacting tough gun safety laws — including background checks for all private gun purchases and a mental health database.

“This is about saving the lives, and the governor got it done,” said Beigel Schulman in a statement. “He is the leader we need to continue to stand up to Donald Trump and the NRA, and he is the leader who is going to put our families first.”

Beigel, a Long Island native, died saving the lives of students during the mass shooting in Parkland, Fla. The 35-year-old geography teacher and cross-country coach was killed while holding open a classroom door for terrified students to escape the killer in the hallway outside.

The 30-second ad features photos of Scott Beigel along with video of his mother reflecting on the loss of her child.

“I’m never going to speak to my son again," said Beigel Schulman in the spot. “My daughter is never going to speak to her brother again. My grandkids are never going to grow up with their uncle … I believe in everything Governor Cuomo has done to help the state of New York at least sleep a little safer and feel a little safer.”
